North Laine Mews.

A container garden in a city-centre Mews.

Client brief was to re-design and create a small budget terracotta pot garden for a shady front of house strip in a shared Mews courtyard, incorporating an existing apple tree and the client’s love of hydrangeas, and to include two further trees, spring-to-summer flowering and to obscure two utility boxes.

Working as mentor to the client, the project started with advisory visits to a selection of nurseries in Sussex; progressed through three stages of planting over the first year to create the composition and form of the garden design and palette; and continues with regular maintenance and development visits across two years.

“A little patch of red bricks outside my house in the shade of the Mews is all the room I have for a garden. Jude really listened to my thoughts around the space and nature and created a garden full of year-round texture and interest. I could not have envisaged the space looking so incredible and it is going from strength to strength due to Jude’s design and planting. And for the first time ever, we have caterpillars, butterflies and bees in the Mews.”
